    Parental experiences of live video streaming technology in neonatal care in England: a qualitative study

    BACKGROUND: The use of bedside cameras in neonatal units facilitates livestreaming of infants to support parental and family bonding when they are unable to be physically present with their baby. This study aimed to explore the experiences of parents of infants previously admitted for neonatal care and who used live video streaming to view their baby in real-time. METHODS: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted after discharge with parents of infants admitted for neonatal care on a tertiary level neonatal unit in the UK in 2021. Interviews were conducted virtually, transcribed verbatim and uploaded into NVivo V12 to facilitate analysis. Thematic analysis by two independent researchers was undertaken to identify themes representing the data. RESULTS: Seventeen participants took part in sixteen interviews. Thematic analysis identified 8 basic themes which were grouped into 3 organizational themes: (1) family integration of the baby including parent-infant, sibling-infant, and wider family-infant attachment facilitated through livestreaming, (2) implementation of the livestreaming service including communication, initial set up of the livestreaming service, and areas for improvement, and (3) parental control including emotional, and situational control. CONCLUSIONS: The use of livestreaming technology can provide parents with opportunities to integrate their baby into their wider family and friendship community and gain a sense of control over their baby's admission for neonatal care. On-going parental education around how to use, and what to expect from, livestreaming technology is required to minimise any potential distress from viewing their baby online

    Development of an educational package for the universal human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme: a co-production study with young people and key informants.

    BACKGROUND: The English schools-based human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme is routinely offered to all young people aged 12-13 years, to prevent cancers affecting the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, anus and mouth. Lower uptake among some population groups has been identified, in part, because of unmet information needs among young people. To address these unmet needs we report intervention planning and development processes to co-produce an educational package about the HPV vaccine. METHODS: We used co-production research methodologies and the 'person-based approach' involving the following iterative stages: (i) collating and analysing primary and secondary evidence, including HPV vaccine communication materials, interviews and workshops; (ii) developing guiding principles; (iii) undertaking a behavioural analysis informed by the Behaviour Change Wheel and the Behaviour Change Technique taxonomy; (iv) development of a preliminary logic model; (v) co-production of resources, and; (vi) refinement of resources informed by feedback from young people and key informants. RESULTS: We co-produced EDUCATE, a theory-based educational package, that is designed to be delivered to young people prior to being offered the HPV vaccine to support uptake. Young people and key informants identified the following key issues to include as content: (i) HPV-related information; (ii) how vaccines work; (iii) safety and side-effects of the HPV vaccine; (iii) eligibility for the HPV vaccination programme, and; (iv) preparation of young people to receive the HPV vaccine. A manual for professionals (e.g. immunisation nurses, school staff) delivering the intervention and a PowerPoint presentation, interspersed with five short films, were co-produced with young people and key informants. Following feedback, the content of the EDUCATE package was refined to increase acceptability, engagement, and persuasiveness to the target users. CONCLUSION: Engagement with young people and key informants was integral to the development of our rigorously developed, theory-based intervention to address young people's information needs about the HPV vaccination programme. The acceptability and persuasiveness of the package has been maximised by working closely with young people and key informants to develop the content. An implementation study to examine how the EDUCATE package is implemented in practice and the impact on uptake of the HPV vaccination programme is underway

    Establishing a large prospective clinical cohort in people with head and neck cancer as a biomedical resource: head and neck 5000

    BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer is an important cause of ill health. Survival appears to be improving but the reasons for this are unclear. They could include evolving aetiology, modifications in care, improvements in treatment or changes in lifestyle behaviour. Observational studies are required to explore survival trends and identify outcome predictors. METHODS: We are identifying people with a new diagnosis of head and neck cancer. We obtain consent that includes agreement to collect longitudinal data, store samples and record linkage. Prior to treatment we give participants three questionnaires on health and lifestyle, quality of life and sexual history. We collect blood and saliva samples, complete a clinical data capture form and request a formalin fixed tissue sample. At four and twelve months we complete further data capture forms and send participants further quality of life questionnaires. DISCUSSION: This large clinical cohort of people with head and neck cancer brings together clinical data, patient-reported outcomes and biological samples in a single co-ordinated resource for translational and prognostic research

    The Bristol CMIP6 Data Hackathon formed part of the Met Office Climate Data Challenge Hackathon series during 2021, bringing together around 100 UK early career researchers from a wide range of environmental disciplines. The purpose was to interrogate the under-utilised but currently most advanced climate model inter-comparison project datasets to develop new research ideas, create new networks and outreach opportunities in the lead up to COP26. Experts in different science fields, supported by a core team of scientists and data specialists at Bristol, had the unique opportunity to explore together interdisciplinary environmental topics summarised in this article
